Experts believe that nearly all newborn reflux infant outgrow the problem by the age of twelve to eighteen months. Physicians rarely diagnose the illness in children older than eighteen months, except in those who have other serious problems such as asthma, cerebral palsy, or development delays. A few studies indicate, however, that newborn who are considered normal may experience acid reflux, possibly to a greater extent than realized by most physicians to date. It is possible that acid reflux could be underdiagnosed in newborn, perhaps for the same reason that many adults are not diagnosed: heartburn is not taken seriously.
